Senior Aerospace Structural Engineer (Detailed job description):
The Job:
Use your stress analysis capabilities and build on your related aerospace experience to perform structural trade studies of different aircraft metallic and composite design alternatives using HyperSizer® during preliminary design. In addition to preliminary design, use HyperSizer to support the customer’s final design by performing detail analysis and automated margin-of-safety stress report writing. Be responsible for your project’s success by meeting customer needs with HyperSizer and effectively communicate the project’s status, design and analysis issues, and results both verbally and written. Offer suggestions for improvement to the customer and be the liaison and spokesperson for your customer base, and meet their needs applying HyperSizer to their design. While providing specific HyperSizer support and FEA coupling expertise to their models, you will get to know and work with hundreds of fellow stress analysts, from many different companies and government agencies. You will be working on the latest aerospace projects such as a composite wing of a business jet or the composite NASA astronaut crew module or launch vehicle. Unlike design projects that come and go, your investment of time in HyperSizer will remain useful and profitable throughout your career.
Requirements:
Candidates should have comprehensive structural aerospace experience in performing structural analysis and design with emphasis on composite materials. The candidates should have many of the following capabilities and related work experience:
- Adept with engineering software tools in a Windows operating system environment. Specifically the ability to learn to use HyperSizer for preliminary and detail design sizing optimization of full airframe and space vehicles, as well as for comprehensive failure analysis and detail stress analysis. The candidate must be capable of becoming an expert HyperSizer user from the perspective of complete understanding of its purpose, scope of problems solved, and advantages when coupled with FEA.
- Effective communication, both verbal and written , to customers and to company colleagues. Candidates will be reporting directly to NASA, Air Force Research Lab, and major aerospace companies and must be able to verify and describe the application of HyperSizer to the customer design.
FEA Coupling
- Exceptional understanding of overall load paths and having an intuitive feel for the efficient use of structural concepts and materials.
- Hands on experience with the iterative design cycle of sizing structure and then updating the FEM to get updated FEA computed internal loads and margins-of-safety.
- Experience with applying external loads such as aerodynamic pressures, flight inertia, and localized forces for control surface, landing, and taxi loads to the FEM, and the FEA resolution of external loads into internal load paths. Experience with mechanical loads and thermal environments including thermally induced stresses and temperature dependent material properties.
- Ability to perform finite element analysis (FEA) with NASTRAN (and ABAQUS a plus). Note, the candidate will not be expected to mesh FEMs, but will be expected to know good models from bad models, and the proper use of coarse models and fine mesh models. Extensive experience with the NASTRAN data types PSHELL, MAT2, PCOMP, MAT8, PBAR, PBARL is necessary.
Sizing Optimization
- Hands on experience sizing structure for minimum weight, with ‘real world’ practical design experience sizing composite laminates, fabrication rules of thumb, including ply drop ratios and layup patterns on complicated surfaces, such as padups around cutouts and bolted joints.
- Experience with the following optimization packages is a plus: NASTRAN Solution 200, GENESIS, OPTISTRUCT.
Failure Analyses
- Applying appropriate failure theories, preparing structural analysis reports, and identifying critical load conditions and margins-of-safety.
- Knowledge of composite material failure theories ranging from classical in-plane laminate stress analysis to more advanced out-of-plane interlaminar shear and peel stress analysis, progressive failure and crack growth VCCT methods. Experience with both ply based (max strain, Tsai-Wu) and laminate based (AML, polynomial) strength prediction approaches and associated material allowables.
- Understanding and experience with issues related to choice of proper composite material allowables: pristine typical vs. damaged design-to values, damage tolerance vs. unnotched allowables and the necessary testing required to achieve them, such as for CAI, OHC, OHT, FHC, FHT, bearing by-pass, etc.
